I’m 50 and still get asked for ID at supermarkets – it’s so flattering

A mother received an unexpected confidence boost after being asked for ID at her local supermarket – despite being 50 years of age.

Abbi Franklin, from Guildford, Surrey, has been facing difficulties accepting her age since celebrating her milestone birthday in March.

However, a routine errand turned into a surprising pick-me-up when a cashier at a Co-op convenience store insisted on seeing ID before allowing her to purchase tobacco.

The mother-of-two – whose daughters are aged 17 and 23 – had to step out of the store to fetch her handbag, which she’d left with her youngest in the car.

Fortunately, she had her ID in her bag, though she admitted it’s not something she usually carries.

Despite facing health issues that prevent her from working, Abbi takes great pride in her appearance.

She maintains a glamorous look with eyelash extensions, blonde highlights, multiple ear piercings, beauty treatments and on-trend outfits.

Loved ones, as well as strangers, often remark on her youthful looks, though typically guessing her age to be just over 35.

The incident sparked a week of celebration for Abbi, who shared her joy with friends and family.

The mother said: ‘It was great – my best day ever! I’ve been bouncing all week because of this.’

She added: ‘I just kept saying “you’re joking.” And he kept going, “No, I need to see ID.”‘

Reflecting on the serendipity of the moment, Abbi said: ‘It was lucky really – I don’t usually take my ID out with me.’

It comes as an Australian woman recently asked people to guess her age and was stunned when most responses were between 50 and 60.

Emily Jane told FEMAIL everyone is ‘so used to seeing faces with filters, photoshop, and cosmetic procedures that they’ve lost touch with reality’.

Emily, from Sydney, has just turned 36. She was ‘shocked’ at all the ‘wild’ responses her video received from both young and old viewers.

‘I’m 57 and I think you’re my age, maybe a few years younger,’ a woman guessed under Emily’s TikTok.

‘You’re in your mid-40s,’ another declared. ‘It’s your grey hair, skin, the fine lines around your eyes, and frown lines.’

Emily said they she stopped dyeing her hair in lockdown, adding: ‘I embraced my grey. Women want to feel comfortable being themselves. We’re all tired of trying to be 25 all the time,’ Emily said.
