Hayley Kiyoko’s ‘Girls Like Girls’ Sets Maya da Costa & Myra Molloy In Movie

Multi-hyphenate Hayley Kiyoko unveiled on Instagram today that her directorial debut Girls Like Girls at Focus Features will star Maya da Costa (Under The Bridge) and Myra Molloy (He’s All That).

The movie is based on Kiyoko’s hit song and viral music video of the same name. da Costa will play Coley while Myra will portray Sonya. The feature “tells the universal story of falling in love for the first time and learning to accept yourself along the way” per the press release this AM.

Today’s announcement coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Girls Like Girls music video which dropped on June 24, 2015 and garnered north of 145M views. In 2023, Kiyoko released the New York Times Best Selling novel Girls Like Girls, which expanded upon the characters from her music video. In 2019, Billboard included the ditty in its list of the “30 Lesbian Love Songs”.

The music video follows Coley and Sonya as they learn about their for each other. However, Sonya’s boyfriend is greatly in the way, and actually assaults Coley after he finds the two women kissing. Coley punches back, and Sonya manages to hear her off of him. The video ends with Coley and Sonya in bliss.

Kiyoko co-wrote the screenplay with Stefanie Scott, the actress who starred as Coley in the original music video.
