‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Teases Jake Borelli’s Return As Levi Schmitt
Look who’s back. Months after Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) left Grey Sloan for a peds research position in Texas, he is returning to Seattle. His appearance was teased Thursday night in a promo for next week’s Episode 2117 of Grey’s Anatomy, “Love You Like a Love Song.” It marks Borelli’s first time back on the ABC medical drama since his farewell Episode 2107 “If You Leave,” which aired in November.
As expected, it was Levi’s BFF Jo (Camilla Luddington) that brought him back as the promo reveals that Levi will officiate Jo and Link’s (Chris Carmack) upcoming wedding. We won’t spoil tonight’s Episode 2116, “Papa was a Rollin’ Stone” beyond noting that it ended with Jo and Like having to plan a wedding in four days.
In Borelli’s exit interview with Deadline in November, he said that he was “very hopeful that Levi will come back,” before referencing Levi’s close friendship with Jo and her twin pregnancy.
“I think the audience is interested to see what Levi is up to, I certainly am,” he Borelli said. “He has so many connections to people still at the hospital, Jo, so I couldn’t imagine the birth of those babies without Levi bending the world to get there.”
Instead of the birth of the twins, Levi made it back for Jo’s nuptials though there are already fan theories that the two events could happen in close succession — if not simultaneously.
“I think we also have this wonderful opportunity to have him grow off camera, and then to have him come back at some point and really be this boss that we know he can be,” Borelli said about a possible Levi return in November.
Borelli, who had been on Grey’s Anatomy for seven seasons, is the latest former Grey’s Anatomy series regular to pop in for a visit this season, joining Jesse Williams and Greg Germann.
