Gerard Butler opened up about some of the unique challenges that he faced while filming the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon in Ireland.
The 55-year-old actor is reprising the role of Stoick the Vast, which he originated onscreen in the animated movies.
He and the rest of the cast filmed the movie in Ireland, starting in January 2024. In a recent interview, Gerard explained that the time that they were there was “very cold and kind of miserable.”
Despite that, he was never cold on set. In fact, he was often sweating so much that his costume beard would come undone.

Speaking to Collider, Gerard noted that his costume weighed 90 pounds and was very involved.
“I had seven layers, thick layers, and a thick beard, and then I had a kind of bearskin or wolfskin over it. It was heavy as s-it,” he recalled.
He continued, added, “When I had my sword and my shield and the helmet, which was heavy, and all those layers with the clasps that went around, it was 90 pounds, my costume. I was, in the middle of the coldest day, soaking wet from sweat inside because it was like a furnace in there,” he laughed.
While Gerard acknowledged that he “was rarely cold” on set, the costume made him so sweaty that parts of it would break down.
“My beard’s coming off because of the sweat,” he said. “You gotta stick it back down. My eyebrows were coming off. I had to stick it down because I was sweating so much.”
How to Train Your Dragon premieres in theaters on June 13, 2025. Check out the cast list!
