Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Would Be Funnier If This Underrated Character Was the Lead

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage pulled something that many shows have never done.

Being the sequel to a prequel, it shifted focus from known and well-liked characters and followed an entirely new group of people, with Georgie as the common denominator between all three shows.

There was also a format shift, where it transitioned from a single-camera to a multicamera setup, reverting to a style considered outdated: live studio and laugh-track sitcoms.

Sitcoms featuring scripted laughter were generally considered a thing of the past, as evidenced by their declining popularity and the decline in their production.

The main question with the show was: will it live up to the legacy of its predecessors? Will it be as funny?

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage proved itself as a standalone product.

Full of heart and humor, it was no surprise that it won viewers over and has emerged as one of the top new comedies on the 2024-2025 TV season.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Recreated the Cooper Family Dynamics

While many of the characters may be new, their personalities are not.

Marrying into the McAllister family expanded Georgie’s world as he became part of the extended family.

However, the dynamics in the family were almost similar to those of the Cooper household.

Audrey was the new Mary. Highly critical and sharp, she keeps everyone on their toes.

Jim was the new George, timid and silent but hardworking and protective.

Georgie was still Georgie while Mandy was a more grown-up version of Missy.

Finally, there was Connor, who got recast in the sequel.

Much about him was unknown, apart from the fact that he was the family’s odd duck whose parents failed to understand him fully.

Meet Connor, The McAllister’s Sheldon

Many of the characters were already familiar because they had appeared on Young Sheldon.

Despite having appeared on Young Sheldon as well, Connor was new in every sense of the word.

Another actor was playing him, and he was older and unfamiliar.

For most of the early half of the season, he remained a mystery, only appearing for a scene or two before disappearing into his room.

However, in that one scene or two, Connor delivered some of the funniest lines.

His flat, matter-of-fact delivery stood out from the other big personalities, making him the easiest one to elicit laughs.

Viewers who have been around since The Big Bang Theory know another character with the same largely unexaggerated matter-of-fact delivery: Sheldon.

Connor was filling in the hole left by Sheldon’s departure, but he was criminally underutilized.

Connor Should Have Been the Main Focus of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage

The above statement is not an indictment of Georgie, whom I very much like.

However, The Big Bang Theory universe had always focused on the odd, misunderstood character who may be a genius even if other people don’t get it.

Luckily, the writers remedied their mistakes in later episodes of the season as Connor got more scenes and developed a friendship with Georgie.

He was revealed to be a musical genius who, with enough practice, could become something great.

He hears sounds in a manner no one else does. Connor can make coherent music from any combination of sounds.

He is the McAllister’s genius, just like Sheldon was for the Coopers.

Funny and very gifted, Connor would have been the perfect character to take over from Sheldon, and maybe propel the franchise to new levels.

It’s worth repeating that Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is a perfectly good show, but it could be made better by having more Connor.

As we await Season 2, the writers should not repeat their early mistake of stashing him away. He’s their not-so-secret weapon.
