Even Jimmy Fallon Is Done Playing It Safe With Trump

In 2016, everyone had to watch Jimmy Fallon genially ruffle Donald Trump’s hair on national television, less than two months before Trump would be elected as the 45th President of the United States.

At the time, people were pretty upset that Fallon was treating Trump like any other guest and not, you know, a man running for the most powerful office in the country. “They have a right to be mad,” Fallon said back in 2017, in response to major backlash to the incident. “If I let anyone down, it hurt my feelings that they didn’t like it.”

Still in the intervening eight years, Fallon has still largely steered clear of too much political commentary, especially in comparison to his late-night peers like Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers. Fallon’s the king of having nothing to say. That’s finally starting to change, as Trump now threatens to get both Fallon’s The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live! canceled, following CBS’ cancellation of Colbert’s Late Show.

“The word is, and it’s a strong word at that, Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT to go in the untalented Late Night Sweepstakes and, shortly thereafter, Fallon will be gone,” Trump wrote in a social meda post on Tuesday. “These are people with absolutely NO TALENT, who were paid Millions of Dollars for, in all cases, destroying what used to be GREAT Television.”

It seems that was enough bait for Fallon to jump into the conversation. On Wednesday night, his monologue actually addressed Trump’s increasingly dismal approval ratings regarding the Epstein files.

“According to a new poll, just 17 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the Epstein files,” Fallon said. “Seventeen? Good lord, he can’t even get that number over 18.”

Was that an actual pedophile joke, Fallon? Look at that, his first teeth are coming in!

Then, because this is Fallon, the host launched into a “little song,” because he knows that Trump is desperate for everyone to stop talking about Epstein. “The whole dang country wants to know / Where’s the Epstein list,” Fallon sang. “But Trump would rather change the subject.”

As someone who is particularly uncharmed by song-comedy, I’ll admit there were moments of cleverness. “So many pictures of those two / Yeah, they are not rare / Time to talk some trash about me, Kimmel and Colbert,” Fallon continued crooning.

Was it the sharpest rebuttal to Trump? Nope, far from it. But it’s a sign of the times. Not only is Trump losing some of his most vocal supporters over the Epstein files, his fascistic antics are getting the typically-neutral characters like Fallon to actually speak up against him.

Welcome to the party Jimmy. I guess it’s better late than never.
