Emily in Paris is not just for your daughter! Our stylist reveals how over 50s can copy her style – and the one fashion secret she borrows from Princess Diana
If you are still hankering for a touch of all things Parisian in your life now that the Olympics has left our screens, then don’t fret.
The hit Netflix series Emily In Paris returned to our screens last week for its much-anticipated fourth series, with its comfortingly intoxicating cocktail of drama, love triangles and spectacular costumes.
But if you’ve always thought these costumes were zany high fashion that only the show’s protagonist – played by Lily Collins – could pull off, this series sees a shift.
Of course, Emily hasn’t ditched her signature style of pattern-clashing and bright colour, but now we see these interspersed with looks that are more mature, more French – the show’s costume designer, Marylin Fitoussi, is from Toulouse, after all.
Think tailoring, Katharine Hepburn-inspired trousers and Audrey Hepburn-inspired ballet flats. Emily’s in her revenge-dressing power era and her wardrobe reflects this.
Certainly, there’s no better place to find some inspiration for your autumn wardrobe – so read on for how to incorporate just the right amount of Emily chic, whatever your age.
Classics for a reason
The perennially stylish Audrey Hepburn (pictured) is one of the inspirations for the new Emily In Paris series

I don’t like fashion, I like clothes’ reads a quote on Marylin Fitoussi’s website – and nowhere is this mantra more evident than in her inspiration for the new Emily In Paris series, the perennially stylish Audrey Hepburn.
Emily’s modern homage to Hepburn in My Fair Lady sees her attending a masquerade ball in a bespoke head-to-toe striped catsuit under a belted open-front skirt by Harris Reed for Nina Ricci, topped off with a wide-brimmed hat. Very Eliza Doolittle.
For those whose life doesn’t involve lavish balls, you can incorporate some similar chic through the elegance of monochromes. Try Monsoon’s Sicily dress (£130, monsoon. co.uk). Pair with ballet flats by day for an Emily-approved look.
Remarkably, in this series she wears flat shoes for the first time. Hers are Miu Miu and crystal-drenched – and one of 2,500 pairs of shoes used this series!
Faux fur adds luxe note
Unlike her multi-coloured faux fur creation, Emily’s beige faux fur coat (pictured) is a more accessible style inspiration

A shortcut to autumn glamour? Faux fur is the answer.
While the multi-coloured faux fur creation Emily wears in the series four trailer might be a bit outlandish for offscreen, look to her beige faux fur coat worn in another episode for more accessible style inspiration.
Emily’s is by French designer Isabel Marant and comes in at £795, but independent brand Issy London has a similarly sumptuous coat (£109, issylondon.co.uk).
For faux fur accessories like the hat that Emily wears in a recreation of an Audrey Hepburn look in the 1963 film Charade, Helen Moore (helen moore.com) does the best.
Grandpa chic

Miu Miu and Chloé spearheaded a ‘grandpa chic’ aesthetic on the Autumn/Winter catwalks – think loafers, cardigans and sweater vests in nostalgic prints.
Naturally, Emily adds her own print-clashing aesthetic to the trend, pairing a striped shirt and built-in tie with a sleeveless printed cardigan in camel; and a monochrome windowpane shirt with a monochrome floral tie.
Karen Millen has an organza shirt with built-in tie (£109, karenmillen.com). The fact the tie and shirt don’t clash à la Emily but are the same shade of blue makes the look less scary.
Accessorise à la Emily
Emily is never one to scrimp on an accessory – witness the Twiggy-inspired head-to-toe yellow ensemble (pictured) she wears in one episode
Sunglasses, £197, blackeyewear.com
L-r: Earrings, £80, pinarozevlat.com; bag, £49.99, zara.com
Emily is never one to scrimp on an accessory – witness the Twiggy-inspired head-to-toe yellow ensemble she wears in one episode. As if the yellow coat, skirt and shirt weren’t enough, a tasselled bag and knee-high socks in the same hue complete her look.
Emily’s bag is by Colombian designer Silvia Tcherassi and costs £532, but colourful bags abound on the High Street – see Zara’s satsuma clutch (£49.99, zara.com).
Accessories are an easy way to add a dose of Emily’s zaniness to any outfit, so indulge in a whimsical clutch or pair of earrings. Fashion is supposed to be fun, after all.
Power moves
Emily’s new love of power suits is reflective of her new-found confidence at work: she’s wearing the trousers literally and metaphorically
L-r: Jacket, £156, trousers, £96, jigsaw-online.com
Emily begins series four heartbroken. But rather than take the Bridget Jones pyjama-wearing approach, she goes for something more Princess Di. Revenge-dressing.
While dresses were a mainstay, now suits take centre stage.
‘I think what will define the new season is this masculine-feminine twist that we never had before,’ says Marylin Fitoussi.
And this new love of power suits is reflective of Emily’s new-found confidence at work: she’s wearing the trousers literally and metaphorically.
Most notable is the vivid cobalt blue trouser suit Emily wears in one episode. Jigsaw has an equally show-stealing suit that’s in the sale (jacket, £156, trousers, £96, jigsawonline.com).
And for extra power dressing factor, colourblock head-to-toe à la Emily, who pairs her cobalt suit with a shirt in a matching hue.
