Ellen Pompeo will appear in more ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 21 episodes

Expect to see more Grey on this season of Grey’s Anatomy.

Ellen Pompeo, who has played Dr. Meredith Grey since the medical drama’s first episode in 2005, will appear in seven episodes in the upcoming 21st season, EW has learned. The medical drama’s star and executive producer will also continue to narrate the staff’s adventures, medicinal and otherwise.

Pompeo stepped back from her on-screen role on the series in season 19, appearing in just eight episodes, followed by the abbreviated past season where she did just four shows. In her last one as a cast regular, Pompeo’s Grey moved her family to Boston, where she planned to research Alzheimer’s. She wasn’t gone for good, though, and has since rekindled her romance with Scott Speedman’s Nick Marsh. Last we saw them, they were planning to live together outside of Beantown.

The news has to be reassuring for fans of Grey’s — the longest running primetime medical drama in the history of TV — who once had reason to think Pompeo would not be around at all much longer.

In November 2022, for instance, Pompeo shared a message on social media that sounded like a goodbye.

“I am eternally grateful and humbled by the love and support you have all shown me, Meredith GREY and the show for 19 seasons!” she wrote. “Through it all….none of it …would have been possible without the best fans in the world. You all are RIDERS and you all have made the ride so fun and ICONIC!! I love you madly and appreciate you right back. This isn’t your first time on the rollercoaster… you know the show must go on and I’ll definitely be back to visit.”

And she meant it.
