El Paso doctor disciplined for improper prescribing leading to patient overdoses

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — An El Paso doctor was disciplined by the Texas Medical Board and accused of prescribing controlled substances to a patient who, in some cases, led to overdoses.
The Texas Medical Board disciplined 27 doctors at a June meeting.
Among those were two El Paso doctors, one of whom was Dr. M.D. Blas Miranda.
The Board found Miranda prescribed controlled substances, without appropriate indications or monitoring, to a patient despite the patient’s history of alcohol abuse and warnings from the patient’s family members regarding the patient’s condition.
The prescription led to the patient suffering multiple overdoses and hospitalizations.
According to the Texas Medical Board, the board and Miranda entered into an agreed order on June 21 requiring him to within one year and three attempts pass the Jurisprudence Examination.
They also agreed within 60 days for him to complete at least 16 hours of CME, divided as eight hours in medical recordkeeping, four hours in risk management, and four hours in ethics.
The other El Paso doctor who was disciplined was Dr. Yolanda Lagunas, an OBGYN in El Paso, who had her license temporarily suspended following allegations of negligence that reportedly led to the deaths of two babies.
