Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Teases an Emotional Goodbye to Beloved Franchise

Downton Abbey is one of those franchises that keeps resurfacing despite a series finale that aired in 2015.

The universe has been kept alive with a movie franchise, but the third big-screen installment will serve as its last.

At least, that’s what we’re being told for now.

There have been rumblings for years that Downton Abbey could return to the small screen with a limited series.

But for those who are interested in saying goodbye, the official trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grande Finale hints at every storyline concluding.

The first footage features a tribute to Dame Maggie Smith, who passed away in 2024.

Of course, Downton Abbey: A New Era said goodbye to Smith’s Violet Crawley, with a poignant death.

But in the wake of Smith’s death, it seems that producers wanted to make sure they tipped the hat during the last hurrah to one of the show’s most memorable characters.

Downton Abbey Is Getting a Grand Finale

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale “follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s,” per the official synopsis.

“As the beloved cast of characters navigates how to lead Downton Abbey into the future, they must embrace change and welcome a new chapter.”

It’s impossible to predict how the movie will end, but there’s a good chance it will leave some plot threads for a potential follow-up.

Every time we think the franchise is dead and buried, it somehow rises like a phoenix with a new entry. Perhaps there will be a spinoff of sorts to keep the franchise alive.

All we can do is watch the supposed last chapter in theaters when it becomes available on Friday, September 12, 2025, to find out.

The trailer is light on plot details, but there are many signs that the trailer’s messaging dials up the nostalgia, which is a great way to market the movie.

Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol, Michael Fox, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera, and Douglas Reith are all confirmed to reprise their roles.

Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan serve as new additions for the movie.
