You already know how much we love the One Chicago universe here.
But naturally, there’s always a soft spot for Chicago Fire in particular, as it’s the mothership and the strongest of the pack, leading to two successful spinoffs (and Chicago Justice, which NBC tragically canceled before its time).
Chicago Fire has been smoldering hot since its debut in 2012, and as we head into its fourteenth season, the series has only proven that it has many stories still left to tell.
With Chicago Fire Season 13, the series still has six key characters from the first season who remain strong, which is rather impressive. Taylor Kinney’s Kelly Severide remains at the helm of the series and has been throughout the season.
We also have Joe Miñoso‘s Joe Cruz, Christian Stolte as Randall “Mouch” McHolland, and David Eigenberg’s Christopher Herrmann.
Real-life firefighter, Anthony Ferraris as Tony Ferraris and Randy Flager as Harold Capp, have also become staples of the series, providing comic relief and heroics since Chicago Fire Season 1.

Teri Reeves – Hallie Thomas
Hallie Thomas was only on one season of the series, but she left an indelible mark, and so many pieces came together because of her.
Before there was Chicago Med, we had Hallie Thomas, a beautiful and talented doctor, who was Matt Casey’s long-term girlfriend and fiancée.
They were together for eight years, and it seemed that she was Casey’s first real love. He wanted to marry her, but she left the country for a bit, and when she returned, Casey was already starting something with Gabby Dawson.
Unfortunately, the team responded to a fire where they discovered that someone murdered Hallie during Chicago Fire Season 1 Episode 22, thus solidifying the truly high stakes of this series and the feeling that no one could really be safe.
Teri Reeves has appeared in numerous broadcast series and made some film appearances since departing Chicago Fire. She had guest-starring roles in NCIS, Scandal, Castle, and Grey’s Anatomy. She also starred in Once Upon a Time and The Punisher.
Reeves was able to reunite with another person on this list, Lauren German, when she guest-starred in an episode of Lucifer. She has also appeared in Hawaii Five-0 and 9-1-1.
You can also see her in films such as 10 Year Plan, Undying, and a series of shorts.
William Smillie – Kevin Hadley
Kevin Hadley is not only a former member of Squad 51, but he’s one of the house’s biggest villains. We saw in the first season that he took issue with Severide taking a liking to Peter Mills and mentoring him.
He started hazing Mills, as his behavior continued to escalate with Mills to the point of it nearly becoming violent, Boden had to remove Hadley and transfer him to another firehouse. Sadly, Hadley didn’t take this well, and it sparked a vendetta against the entire house.
Throughout Chicago Fire Season 2, the squad responds to a multitude of arsons, and over time, Severide can determine that Hadley is behind them. This leads to Severide catching him in the act, resulting in a fire that causes Hadley to sustain severe burns and ultimately leads to his arrest.
Smillie last appeared in Chicago Fire Season 3 Episode 13, but since then, the actor starred in the short-lived series APB. He’s also recurred in South Side, Dark Matter, and Empire. He’s guest-starred on Fargo and starred in films such as Consumed, 30 Miles from Nowhere, and What They Had.
Charlie Barnett – Peter Mills
In many ways, Peter Mills served as the audience gateway to House 51.
We tended to follow this young firefighter as he joined the house and acclimated himself to this squad of diverse people while simultaneously trying to support and help his family and keep the family diner afloat.
A great deal of drama centered around Peter Mills. His father was a former firefighter who worked alongside Boden before dying in the line of duty, and he also struggled with learning that Boden and his mother had an affair at some point.
Mills was a great firefighter who went from a strong candidate for Truck 81 to working on Squad 3. However, when he sustained an injury, he also spent some time working in the ambulance.
Peter Mills had deep connections with many of the characters, finding a mentor in Severide and falling in love with Gabby Dawson, as well as other characters who entered the fray. He also had his fair share of adversaries, including Hadley, Benny Severide, and, at times, Boden, due to his own anger toward them.
Eventually, Mills, after moving around in the squad and even applying to be a police officer, opted to put his family first, relocating to North Carolina to start a new restaurant in Chicago Fire Season 3 Episode 20.
Since Chicago Fire, Bartnett has appeared in a variety of roles. He’s a prolific actor who stays booked and busy in many projects.
He has starred as a series regular in Secrets and Lies, Valor, Tales of the City, Russian Doll, Ordinary Joe, and The Acolyte.
Bartnett has also recurred in Arrow, YOU, and Special, and has guest-starred in Orange Is the New Black, as well as starred in the podcast series Red Frontier. He’ll also star in the upcoming film Bookends.
Lauren German – Leslie Shay
It’s been over a decade, and we’re still not over Leslie Shay’s death. Losing Shay has been one of the most heart-wrenching tragedies and shocking moments in Chicago Fire.
Leslie Shay was the heart of the station, often having one of Chicago Fire’s best dynamics of the series as she was best friends and roommates with Severide.
They were each other’s person, sticking by each other through thick and thin, facing life’s challenges, and a multitude of hookups and breakups with a diverse array of women between the two of them.
Shay even considered using him as her sperm donor when she wanted to have a child, in what had to be one of their most hilarious moments to date.
She had a rough go of it when a frequent flyer of hers who was obsessed with her killed himself in front of her, prompting her to go off the deep end and resulting in a turbulent relationship with friend and partner, fellow EMT, Gabby.
Tragically, in the moments following Boden’s wedding, Shay succumbed to injuries she sustained during an arson that the unit responded to, and her death deeply impacted the rest of the house for years to come.
Lauren German is a stellar actress who quickly secured another fan-favorite series and role as Chloe Decker on Lucifer.
The series was a massive hit. When the network canceled it, fans rallied so hard for a save that Netflix picked it up, and it continued a strong run there as well.
German played Chloe for six glorious seasons, and it was a delightful role for her to take on after losing Leslie Shay. The series concluded in 2021, and we eagerly await what the actress chooses to pursue next.
Monica Raymund – Gabby Dawson
Gabby Dawson is one of the most iconic characters from the Chicago Fire series. She also leaves such a lasting legacy on the series.
As the fierce, lovable spitfire EMT, she wore many hats throughout the series as lead paramedic for Ambo 61 as well as a firefighter candidate. She also co-owned Molly’s with Hermann.
Dawson had many deep connections with other characters. Her greatest love stories have included Peter Mills and Matt Casey, whom she marries and reconnects with even after they parted ways when she relocated to Puerto Rico.
She was very close to Leslie Shay and took her death incredibly hard, and it also made it difficult for her to bond with Brett when he first arrived, but they quickly became friends. And she even seemed to give her blessing to Brett, who would later become Csey’s new wife.
Dawson had a rough go of it throughout her tenure on the series, losing friends, lovers, and multiple attempts at becoming a mother after a miscarriage and later losing her foster son, Louie. However, she found a renewed sense of purpose through critical work in Puerto Rico.
Raymund came into Chicago Fire after finding massive success on Lie to Me, and since her departure from this Dick Wolf series, she went on to star in the gritty series Hightown. She also guest-starred in the Prime Video short-lived series, On-Call.
Additionally, Ramund has starred in films such as Bros and The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial and the podcast series Dark Woods.
Yuri Sardarov – Brian “Otis” Zvonecek
Oof, Chicago Fire still doesn’t feel the same way without Otis. He had such a distinct present that no one has been able to duplicate. He always had a big heart, quirky humor, endearing mustachioed smile, and was deeply loyal to his firehouse family.
Otis was also multitalented, an engineer of sorts who was as adept at fixing things at the Firehouse as he was assisting with some of his brothers’ harebrained or ingenious ideas.
He was one half of Chicago Fire’s most dynamic duos alongside roommate and longtime friend, Cruz.
Sadly, Chicago Fire Season 8 ripped our hearts out with Otis’ tragic death, but it was undoubtedly one of the most emotional moments from the entire season, and his legacy and memory live with us — every bit as resonant for the series as Leslie Shay’s.
Since Chicago Fire, Sardarov has made the rounds on television, playing roles that are the very antithesis of Otis.
He has appeared in films, Amy and Peter are Getting Divorced, Adam, and Daddy. He has also had guest-starring roles on series like FBI: International and The Rookie.
Jesse Spencer – Matthew Casey
Matt Casey is gone, but never forgotten. It helps that he still pops up on the series here and there during some bigger moments, so we don’t have to miss him for too long.
For many seasons, Casey was the glue that kept the Firehouse together, the guy who led by example and earned the respect of everyone there. He was protective, loyal, and had a moral compass that transferred from the Firehouse to politics and other parts of his personal life as well.
Casey endured so much on the job, losing friends, facing numerous adversaries, and experiencing some of the series’ greatest love stories. He even found his place as a father figure, leaving the house to relocate to Oregon and take care of one of his fallen brothers.
From his wedding to Brett to brief appearances, we still see him, and we likely will again.
But since Casey stepped back from the Firehouse, Jesse Spencer has starred in the series Last Days of the Space Age. He has also starred in a podcast series, True Noir: The Assassination of Anton Cermak, where you can currently find his talents.
He has also married his wife, had his first child, and officially become an American citizen.
Eamonn Walker – Chief Boden
Where would Chicago Fire even be without Boden?
In many ways, for roughly 12 seasons, he was the cornerstone of the Firehouse — the father figure, fearless leader, and grounding force for everyone who walked through those doors.
He has been Firehouse 51’s moral anchor and has left this fire presence as the wise, patient, protective leader with so much integrity. He’s made the Firehouse a home.
Of course, he went on to ensure that all of Chicago’s firehouses could be the same way when he subsequently gained the position of Deputy Fire Commissioner after a hard-won fight. By Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 18, we got an entire hour devoted to catching up wth Boden and learning what the job entails.
Walker originally left the series due to personal reasons, and he hasn’t been involved in other projects since then. But it’s a relief to know that he hasn’t completely hung up his helmet.
In Memoriam
DuShon Monique Brown – Connie
Behind every great leader is a right-hand, and Connie was that for Chief Boden since she made her debut on Chicago Fire Season 1 Episode 7. She was an endearing force and the ultimate scene-stealer, keeping Boden and the Firehouse in line with a few glares and a sentence or two.
Connie was a bit of a Den Mother for Firehouse 51, magically handling business for them and helping everything at the house run smoothly.
We learn early on that she’s irreplaceable and that it’s hard for the Firehouse to run at top speed without her around.
We last see Connie on Chicago Fire Season 6 Episode 20, and by Chicago Fire Season 6 Episode 23, we learn that she’s left the Firehouse to become a counselor.
Brown was best known for her role as Nurse Katie Welch on Prison Break. She also appeared in Shameless, Boss, and Empire before landing her role as Connie on Chicago Fire.
Sadly, Brown passed away on March 23, 2018, from sepsis, a few days after seeking medical help for chest pains. She leaves behind a daughter and many fans.
