‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ exclusive Logan variants clip explores Henry Cavill cameo, more

Marvel’s two biggest sons of bitches are coming home after crushing the box office all summer.

Deadpool & Wolverine, now the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, is set to hit digital retailers (Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango) on Oct. 1 before releasing on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on Oct. 22, Entertainment Weekly can exclusively confirm. And, naturally, the film comes with an onslaught of bonus features, including a gag reel, deleted scenes, and making-of videos.

EW can exclusively preview one such feature (shown above), with a behind-the-scenes peek at all those Wolverine variants, including Henry Cavill’s “Cavillrine” and Hugh Jackman’s different looks as the many alternate-reality versions of the adamantium-clawed Logan.

Film editors Shane Reid and Dean Zimmerman begin the clip by touching on their conversations to bring in multiple versions of Wolverine, some of which are inspired by comic artist and writer John Byrne, with the brown-and-tan-suit; the cover of The Uncanny X-Men #251 that featured the crucifixion of Logan; Old Man Logan, with Jackman enjoying a rocking chair on a porch; and the Cavillrine, which is how Cavill’s Wolverine variant is credited in the movie.

“That’s a recipe for humor,” director Shawn Levy adds. “It’s certainly a recipe for conflict, which is also funny. In the case of our movie, it’s a recipe for violence.”

Deadpool & Wolverine reunited Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson and Jackman as Logan for the first time since 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a film both stars like to lampoon on and off screen. The long-hyped event film kicked off after the storyline for 2018’s Deadpool 2, when Reynolds’ “Merc with a Mouth” is plucked from his current reality and brought to the headquarters of the multiverse watchdogs, the Time Variance Authority. Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) informs him that Wade’s world is destined to perish after the death of its “anchor being,” which happens to be the Wolverine we know from the past X-Men movies. So Deadpool sets off to find a different Wolverine from another parallel universe to fix his own, setting himself and this other variant on an odyssey across the Marvel multiverse, featuring an assortment of surprise cameos along the way.

The film’s 4K UHD Blu-ray will come with two limited-edition SteelBooks: one with Deadpool on the cover and artwork of Wolverine variants on the inside, the other with Wolverine on the cover, and artwork of Deadpool variants on the inside. Walmart will also release an exclusive Blu-ray that features an inside pop-up of the Deadpool Corps. fight sequence from the movie.
