Danny DeVito Confirms Rumor About ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Ultimate Fate

As It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia embarks upon its 17th season, The Gang has repeatedly dropped hints that the end may be nigh for their long-running sitcom. But after Charlie Day’s cryptic quotes to reporters, Glenn Howerton’s reflections on nearly quitting the show and the RCG Productions vanity card featuring some existential and/or possibly material complaints — “I don’t want to do this anymore, I want someone else to do it,” Howerton said in the reversed clip — Danny DeVito stepped in to set the record straight.
The man behind Frank Reynolds revealed what the future actually has in store for Paddy’s Pub, confirming that The Gang is staying together — at least through Season 18, the last season for which Always Sunny has been formally renewed.
“We’re going to go again next season,” DeVito explained during a recent conversation with Collider. “We just talked about when we’re going to start.”
Don’t Miss
DeVito said he’s ready to get back to work, specifically citing cast members Kaitlin Olson, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Artemis Pebdani and an unspecified group of “these guys,” most likely consisting of Howerton, Day and the newly-abbreviated Rob Mac.
“It’s something that you look forward to because it really is so much fun,” DeVito explained, adding that though the show’s return is all but certain, Frank’s specific arc is still up in the air. “Charlie and Rob and Glenn get into a writers’ room and, you know, it’s probably like, in The Wizard of Oz, you know, but reversed, hurricanes on the inside of the room,” DeVito recalled. “They’re on brooms. There’s shit flying by them, ideas and all kind of crazy stuff. And they know anything they want to do to Frank, they can.”
DeVito’s comments come shortly after Day sounded off on the show’s 18th season, revealing that it may mark the end of the FXX staple.
“We have a contract with FX up to 18 seasons, and all of us feel as though we can do that,” he told the L.A. Times. “So that’s at least one more. Beyond that, I’m not sure they’ll ask for more seasons, so next year could be it.”
