CTAC wraps up phenomenal year with Arts Education in Schools | Community

The Four Percent

In a year’s time, Art Education in Schools, a part of the Chisholm Trail Arts Council (CTAC), provided a variety of art education within Duncan and surrounding communities. Its goal is to offer schools and students art-related opportunities.

To kick off the year, Art Education launched an art contest for those of all ages to take part in. The winner, Patricia Lassiter, was awarded $100 and her artwork was displayed on the CTAC Live Playbill for the 2020-2021 season. Many of the submissions from other artists were also highlighted within the playbill.

Then, in March, Art Education in Schools and CTAC Art Gallery showcased 248 pieces of artwork made from students within Stephens County. Monetary awards for Best of Show were awarded to Alayna Hill, Cole Young, and Ryan Young.

A month later, a creative writing class at Marlow Middle School received instruction from Shaun Perkins, the curator of the Rural Oklahoma Museum of Poetry and a frequent perspective in numerous regional and national literary journals. During her visit to Marlow, Perkins incorporated drawing into her lessons and compiled a video that included every child’s art, along with an excerpt from their writings.

To celebrate National Kite Month, the arts council sponsored local artist, Dave Young, to instruct kite making with third through fifth grade students at Woodrow Wilson and Mark Twain. Each child put their own artistic designs on large pieces of plastic, and then constructed their own kites with small bamboo sticks. Many of the children were given the opportunity to fly their kites on the school playgrounds.

Topping off the successful year, Art Education in Schools offered two $500 scholarships to Marlow High School senior Aubrey Topping and homeschool senior Lillie Hodgson, who are striving to pursue a degree associated with the arts.
