Conservative MP Patrick Spencer Pleads Not Guilty

The British politician alleged to have sexually assaulted two women at London’s popular Groucho Club has pleaded not guilty.

The BBC reported this afternoon that Patrick Spencer appeared in court to confirm his name and date of birth, and deliver his not guilty plea to both charges. He is due to appear next at Southwark Crown Court, where Kevin Spacey appeared two years ago, on July 14 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

The prosecutor today told the court that the alleged offences happened on August 12 2023 at the Groucho Club, a popular haunt for London’s media elite, which had its licence suspended late last year after the alleged crimes came to light and reopened in early 2025. Spencer is accused of putting his arms under one complainant’s arms and cupping her breasts over her clothing, the BBC reported. The second complainant’s account is similar, the BBC added.

Soon after it happened, the matter was reported to the police. Spencer was then charged last month and had the whip withdrawn by the opposition Conservative Party in UK parliament, meaning that he cannot sit as a Conservative MP but can remain as an independent.

At the time, a Conservative Party spokesman told the BBC: “Patrick Spencer MP has been suspended from the Conservative Party, and the whip withdrawn, with immediate effect. The Conservative Party cannot comment further on an ongoing legal case.”
