Bruins pick centre James Hagens seventh overall in first round

James Hagens is staying in Boston.

The Bruins selected Hagens seventh overall in the first round of the NHL Draft on Friday in Los Angeles.

Hagens, 18, was a point-per-game player over 37 contests with Boston College last season, recording 11 goals and 26 assists before the top-ranked Eagles fell in the second round of the NCAA tournament against Denver.

The Hauppage, N.Y., native starred for the champion Americans at the recent world juniors, scoring nine points (five goals, four assists) in seven games.

Standing five-foot-11 and 177 pounds, Hagens was fourth in Sportsnet analyst Jason Bukala’s prospect rankings earlier in June. He entered the season viewed by many as the top-rated prospect.

Bukala called Hagens a “dynamic offensive talent” who projects as a top-line forward.
