British and Irish Lions Tour 2025: Wallabies winger options, Dylan Pietsch performance for Western Force; Morgan Turinui, Matt Burke analysis

Call off the debate.

Dylan Pietsch will be in a Wallabies jersey for the first Test against Fiji before the Lions tour.

At least that’s the take of Morgan Turinui and Matt Burke after Pietsch’s performance for the Force on Saturday.

Pietsch had the chance to show Joe Schmidt what he could do against the British and Irish Lions and while it was a comfortable loss for his side, there wasn’t a shortage of moments where the back cut through the defensive line.

Turinui has seen enough with Andrew Kellaway, Max Jorgsensen, Corey Toole and Pietsch all in contention.

“(He was) outstanding, should be the left winger for the first Test,” Turinui said on Stan Sport’s Between Two Posts.

“I had him there before, it’s nice to be proved right. I think he’s a gun, he’s the right work rate, it’s the skillset he brings, the effort. As long as his body’s fine.

“It looks like they’re going to pick (Joseph) Suaalii and (Len) Ikitau in the midfield which frees up a spot there and you can go Tom Wright as 15 and then you can go do we want experience in Kellaway or a young flyer in Jorgensen. I just think Pietsch may be the constant they can pick there.”

Burke agreed, stating Pietsch was his man of the match for the Force.

“In a team that lost 54-7, I thought he was outstanding,” he said.

“… There’s that old notion, do you choose on great form or reputation and his form has been great. I’d then throw in a Corey Toole as well because with the speed of play I find him very similar to (Lions winger) Mack Hansen.

“I reckon Pietsch will get there because he’s done the hard yards this year.”

In the Wallabies’ last Test against Ireland in December, Jorgensen and Kellaway were picked on the wings. Harry Potter was picked ahead of Jorgensen in the Test before that against Scotland.

Pietsch last started against England in November.
