As the Toronto Blue Jays get set to take on the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, their pitching depth gets a bit of a shakeup.
The team announced that right-handed pitcher Paxton Schultz has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to right finger inflammation. Meanwhile, in a subsequent move, the Blue Jays have recalled left-hander Justin Bruihl from triple-A and he’ll be active for Sunday’s contest.
Schutlz made 12 appearances for Toronto this year prior to being sidelined, holding a 4.56 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through 23.2 innings pitched. The 27-year-old has started two games and finished three for the Blue Jays throughout his first season in the majors.
His last appearance came in Friday’s 15-1 drubbing at the hands of the Red Sox when Schultz lasted 1.1 innings, giving up five hits, including a home run, for three earned runs and a walk.
Meanwhile, Bruihl gets set for his second stint with the Blue Jays this season. The 28-year-old lefty previously made two appearances for Toronto in mid-June games against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Bruihl did not allow a run and struck out four over his 2.2 innings with the Blue Jays this year. He holds a career 4.46 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 78.2 innings.
The Blue Jays look to bounce back with a win in Sunday’s rubber match at Fenway Park. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. ET / 10:35 a.m. PT on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+.
