Big Brother Alums on The Amazing Race Was a Bad Decision for CBS

The Amazing Race producers may have made a huge mistake by featuring at least one Big Brother alum on each team in a new season.

That’s the idea for the upcoming fall season, with CBS planning to air the 90-minute episodes on Wednesday nights after Survivor Season 49 installments.

Former Big Brother houseguests were invited to race around the world with a loved one as their partner, potentially tapping into the fandom that Big Brother has amassed over the years.

However, one of the biggest problems with Big Brother is that its die-hard fans are often addicted to learning information about the season or the people playing the game.

I thought it could be an excellent opportunity for the shows to crossover, and it has proven a success in the past with Big Brother couples participating in The Amazing Race.

Unfortunately, I think it was a terrible idea to have only teams linked to Big Brother.

It pigeon-holes the audience and could alienate viewers who are uninterested in watching reality stars compete on the show.

Big Brother Alums Take Over The Amazing Race Season 38

A new season of The Amazing Race features 13 teams, with 14 Big Brother alums spread across those teams.

When I heard the original announcement, I was pretty excited about it, mostly because I am such a fan of Big Brother and The Amazing Race.

But now reality has set in, and I’m no longer looking forward to watching it unfold this fall.

That reality came in the form of spoilers hitting social media — and I am admittedly someone who reads a lot of social media posts about reality TV shows.

Thus, rather than looking forward to a season where I could be surprised at every elimination, I now know who gets eliminated from each leg.

Yes, I can blame myself for reading that online content.

However, this goes back to die-hard Big Brother fans being overly interested in what alums are up to, which leads them to seek out the results of The Amazing Race Season 38.

Spoilers From The Amazing Race May Have Killed the New Season

We already know who wins the next season of The Amazing Race, so the excitement has already worn off before the first episode even arrives this fall.

If other viewers share the same sentiment as I do, it could lead to a sharp downturn in primetime ratings.

The ratings may take a significant hit simply because viewers who are uninterested in Big Brother may change the channel, thereby compounding the issues.

Maybe if the producers had been more successful at keeping the spoilers in check — possibly by having the finish lines of legs indoors where prying eyes couldn’t witness them — I would be looking at the next season through different eyes.

At least I can still look forward to Big Brother Season 27 this summer, especially with the group of brand-new houseguests.

And maybe the showrunners are getting closer to having Big Brother All-Stars Season 4 as well.

It’s the best way to support indie TV coverage that actually cares about the shows.

We want to hear from you!! Is this the best foot forward? Should CBS invest in finding new unknowns for us to root for, or should they just keep using old faces to keep their shows alive?
