Before Biting His ‘Cobra Kai’ Co-Star, Martin Kove Played Mind Games with Bill Hader

Cobra Kai may be over, but one of its stars is currently making headlines for the weirdest possible reason.

Martin Kove, who played the villainous John Kreese in the original Karate Kid series and its recent spin-off series, assaulted his Cobra Kai co-star Alicia Hannah-Kim at a fan convention. Specifically, he bit her, which is shocking news to hear about any well-known actor not named Jon Voight.

Per The Hollywood Reportera police report filed after the incident describes that Kove “suddenly grabbed her arm and bit her upper arm so hard it nearly drew blood, and she yelled out in pain. Once Martin Kove finished biting her arm, he grabbed her arm again and began kissing it where he had bit her.”

When Hannah-Kim and her husband later addressed the issue with Kove, he reportedly “exploded on them, saying something to the effect of how dare they confront him, and he did not do anything wrong.” He told a police officer that he “thought he was being funny.”

But as Entertainment Weekly pointed out, this isn’t the first time that we’ve heard a story about Kove being a giant creep. While it wasn’t nearly as bad as his recent alleged offense, he once played mind games with a young, yet-to-be-famous Bill Hader.

In a 2013 episode of WTF, Hader told Marc Maron that one of his first jobs in Los Angeles, when he was just 20-years-old, was driving “Marty Kove” to set every day. “I’m driving him around in my shitty car, and he got me lost on purpose,” Hader explained. “He hadn’t read the script yet, so he was like, ‘Nah, you don’t take this. You take Havenhurst. What are you getting on the 405 for?’ And I had, like, a Thomas Guide on my lap.”

After his boss “screamed” at him for getting to work so late, Hader had a “terrible day.” On the way home from the shoot, Kove asked, “Bill, are you mad at me?” Although Hader assured the actor that he wasn’t upset, Kove claimed that he wanted to make it right. “There’s a McDonald’s right up here. Pull over, and we’ll get you a cookie. We’ll get a milkshake,” he instructed the driver.

After asking Hader for his choice of milkshake flavor, and stressing that he was “so sorry” for his behavior, Kove went into the McDonald’s. But when he reemerged, things took a turn. “He comes back out eating the chocolate chip cookie and drinking the milkshake. And then he just sits in the back and goes, ‘Come on, let’s go. Go,’” Hader recalled. “It was the biggest fuck you. I was like, ‘Woah.’ It was a weird mind fuck of like, ‘I’m going to get you this thing.’ And then he ate it in front of me. And I just drove home in silence.”

“That was my first ‘Welcome to Hollywood, kid’ moment,” Hader told Maron. He also noted that he later heard that Kove was “going through a divorce” at the time, reasoning that he “might be a really nice guy.”

Seeing as how he just went full Hannibal Lecter on a co-worker, that seems doubtful.
