AFL great Dane Swan dazzles in debut win over Dale Thomas

ADELAIDE: Collingwood legend Dane Swan admitted “money talks” and he could be tempted to fight again after making short work of ex-teammate Dale Thomas at The Gathering on Wednesday night.

Swan, 40, impressed with his sharp footwork and wide array of punches against a game but overmatched Thomas, winning by unanimous decision after four rounds.

“It felt good. A couple of nerves when I got in there, but once the bell goes, like playing footy, you forget about the crowd,” Swan said.

“I really enjoyed it. I wish I could have done a couple more rounds. I’m not a mean spirited or aggressive person so it’s hard to walk in there and try and hit a mate. I just wanted to show some of the skills that I’ve learned. I didn’t really want to make it a street fight.”

Swan used boxing to keep fit during his illustrious AFL career and said he hadn’t lifted a weight since retiring.

His dazzling performance and high profile will no doubt attract more boxing offers but Swan was loath to call out a prospective opponent.

“Boxing is way harder than what we do,” Swan said.

“I’ve got three young kids under three. Money talks, but I’m very happily retired, undefeated.”

Not shy on letting his hair down, Swan planned to celebrate his win with gusto although it might not quite match his recent 40th birthday.

“I don’t know if Adelaide on a Wednesday night compares to Vegas. But we’ll make the most of the situation we’ve put ourselves in.”
