It’s the time of the year when everyone waves their rainbow flag with a little more enthusiasm.
Queer television has always existed, but in recent years, there has definitely been more shows featuring LGBTQ+ characters and storylines.
This list has a mix of iconic comedies and dramas that everyone should watch during Pride Month.
Of course, this list is far from a complete catalogue of every queer show.
However, if you’re looking to find a new favorite LGBTQ+ show to start watching, you’re in the right place!
Pose (FX/Hulu)
Pose is probably one of the most underrated yet important LGBTQ+ series.
This FX show is a historical drama that follows the lives of queer and trans people of color in the ballroom scene in New York.
Across all three seasons, the show doesn’t shy away from the difficulties this marginalized population faced during the 1980s.
But Pose also highlights the joy of this community.

Heartstopper (Netflix)
Especially for LGBTQ+ young adults, Heartstopper is a must-watch.
Based on the webcomics by Alice Oseman, the Netflix series follows a group of queer teens navigating the ups and downs of discovering their identity.
Heartstopper has quickly earned the reputation of offering adorable slice-of-life moments while also covering more serious topics around mental health.
The show is slated to end with a movie instead a fourth season.
While it’s sad to see another mainstream queer show end, Heartstopper has already secured its reputation as one of the best LGBTQ+ shows in the past decade.
Yellowjackets (Showtime)
Yellowjackets has the perfect mix of horror, drama, and queer stories.
Partially based on a true story, the Showtime show follows a high school girls’ soccer team that gets stranded in a forest after a deadly plane crash.
It weaves together moments from right after the crash and far in their adult futures. This creative approach paid off, as this show has garnered a dedicated fan base.
Recently, Yellowjackets was renewed for a Season 4. While Season 3 may not have been as strong as the first two seasons, this show is still an amazing watch.
Overcompensating (Prime Video)
Overcompensating captures the queer experience of being a college freshman in a hilarious but honest light.
This series recently premiered on Prime Video.
It follows Benny, a closeted gay guy, and his friend Carmen as they navigate their new college lives.
The show has so many great moments that are sure to make any viewer laugh out loud. But it’s also deeply touching.
I definitely saw a lot of my own queer college experience reflected in Overcompensating.
Prime Video has yet to confirm a Season 2, so go support the show!
Clean Slate (Prime Video)
LGBTQ+ advocate and icon Laverne Cox stars in Prime Video’s Clean Slate.
This adorable sitcom follows the owner of a car wash reconnecting with his transgender daughter.
Every episode is full of heart, as Clean Slate shows the power of community and acceptance. As a sitcom lover, I tuned in and binge-watched the entire show in one sitting.
Unfortunately, Prime Video cancelled the show a few months after it premiered this past February. Still, it’s a lovely watch!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Hulu)
This wouldn’t be a list of LGBTQ+ shows if it didn’t mention Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Having premiered in 1997, this show has been known as one of the most progressive shows of its time. Not only was it a female-led horror-fantasy show, but one of the main characters was also openly queer.
During Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5, Willow comes out as a lesbian and has a girlfriend named Tara.
To have a character openly talk about their sexuality, especially a female character, was a big deal at the time. Plus, Buffy is often read as a queer show due to the nature of Buffy’s double-life.
Even though it’s not Halloween yet, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a perfect watch for both classic horror lovers and LGBTQ+ folks
A League of Their Own (Prime Video)
Another great LGBTQ+, women-centric show is A League of Their Own.
This Prime Video series details the lives of women’s baseball league in the World War II era. It’s a TV adaptation of the 1992 movie by the same name.
The best part of A League of Their Own is the endearing friendships the main characters form with each other. There aren’t many shows that spotlight queer women uplifting and supporting each other.
Again, this show was cancelled after one season, but very few shows have combined the worlds of sports, historical drama, and LGBTQ+ stories together like A League of Their Own.
