Air fryer toaster ovens
Air fryer ovens are the secret weapon of kitchen appliances. These are mini convection ovens you can put right on your countertop. They’re versatile and cook just about anything—whether you want to defrost a pizza or even cook a whole bird. They are a bit more expensive than egg-style air fryers but, if you get a good model, you might just use it more than your oven.
Breville makes the best air fryer toaster ovens and if we had to pick our favorite, it’d be the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro. We love it for its extra large capacity and versatile cooking functions. It can fit nine slices of toast, an entire 14-pound turkey, a 5-quart Dutch oven, or a 9×13″ pan. It also comes with presets to proof, dehydrate, air fry of course, and more. The size and price are rather hefty, but like we said above, you’ll probably find yourself using this countertop convection oven more often than your regular oven. It preheats quickly, uses less energy, and can do just about anything a full-size oven can (and probably do it better, to be honest).
If you’re thinking “all of this sounds great, but I have no intention of replacing my full-size oven” or you’d simply prefer something that takes up less space, go for the Breville Compact Smart Toaster Oven—it’s a smaller version of the convection oven above. It can fit four slices of toast, has eight cooking functions, and is on sale for 21% off.
The same brand that makes one of our favorite all-purpose pans and a perfect pot that might make you break up with your Dutch oven recently started making appliances, and that’s a good thing. The Our Place Wonder Oven might be serving up Easy-Bake Oven vibes, but this thing is not a toy. The air fryer setting works wonders (sorry) on everything from frozen pizza rolls to chicken wings and french fries—and it’s marked down now during Our Place’s Cyber Monday sale.
Ninja makes a few of our favorite basket-style air fryers (more on that later), but the brand also has one or two oven models as well. While not as tall as other ovens on this list, the Ninja oven still has plenty of room to make a pizza or up to nine slices of toast. What really sets it apart from other models however is that you can flip it up to rest vertically when you’re done, and then pull it down when you want to use it again. This makes it especially ideal for people who want an air fryer oven, but might not have the counter space for it—since you can make use of any vertical space when you’re not using the oven and then pull it down whenever you need.
Basket-style air fryers
A basket-style model is the slightly more common and familiar type of air fryer. They’re not quite as versatile as the oven models, but they’re a little less expensive and often take up less space. Plus, some of these models can really revolutionize your cooking.
This sleek, modern contraption might look a little like an alien space ship, but it’s actually one of our favorite air fryers. The non-stick ceramic basket is bigger than other basket models, with the ability to fit a whole 12-inch pizza. It also features a wide temperature range and 10 cooking presets that you can easily navigate through on the touchscreen interface. It does take up lots of space and costs a pretty penny, but some Cyber Monday deals on Williams Sonoma and directly on Typhur can help with the price.
While you might recognize Instant Pot for their, well, Instant Pots, the brand also makes one of our favorite air fryer models. The Instant Vortex actually offers eight inches more basket space than other models, but the slim design means it won’t take up much space on your countertop.
If you liked everything about the Instant Vortex Slim, but are looking for something with a smaller capacity, then the Instant Vortex Plus might be for you. We consider it a great budget pick, and it’s even more affordable this Cyber Monday at over half off on Amazon.
This mini model from Cosori was the top compact air fryer pick over at Epicurious. It’s quiet, lightweight, easy to store on the counter or tucked away in a cupboard, and—most importantly—it works really well. This is a good option for studio apartment or dorm room-dwellers, or for people who typically cook one serving at a time. With a 2.1-quart capacity, it can handle a single serving a French fries or veggies, and just barely fits two veggie burger patties nestled side by side.
Philips air fryers were our preferred makers of basket-style air fryers for a long time. Recently competition in the category has gotten a little tight, so they no longer hold the top spot, BUT that doesn’t mean they aren’t excellent appliances. This particular model is suited for a person who takes air fryer style cooking quite seriously, and is looking to expand the capabilities of what they can do with the appliance in the kitchen. The two drawers allow you to cook a main entrée and a side dish simultaneously, meaning you can get food to the dinner table much faster.
The Midea Dual Basket air fryer is unique in that it orients its two cooking zones vertically rather than horizontally, and is a sort of hybrid between toaster oven basket style air fryers. We did a full comprehensive review here. In short, we thought this was an above average air fryer that, with a little bit of familiarizing with its particularities, allows you to pull off some pretty great meals. In particular, this air fryer made a perfectly cooked, succulent whole chicken that was immediately devoured in the test kitchen.
While this Ninja model uses a round basket instead of the square basket we prefer, it’s a simple and great air fryer option for anyone looking to make, say, small batches of fries or some homemade chips. It’s easy to use, relatively lightweight, and 22% off at Target. Get it for any new apartment dweller or a college student who’s just learning to cook.
The Ninja DoubleStack is basically a vertical version of a dual-basket air fryer, like the Philips, just with the baskets stacked on top of each other instead of side-by-side. This means the gadget takes up less space on your counter. You can program each compartment separately and a “Smart Finish” feature, which delays the start time of the shorter cook, allows you to cook your whole meal and trust both dishes will be done at the same time. If you know someone that uses their air fryer to make all their meals, this is undoubtedly the air fryer for them. You can get it at a discount directly on Ninja during the retailer’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, as well as on Amazon and Target.
If you prefer a wider, dual zone air fryer where the compartments are positioned side-by-side, then you’ll likely want something like the FlexBasket. It’s got a slightly smaller capacity than the DoubleStack, but you can turn your baskets into one giant “MegaZone” compartment thanks to a removable divider. This makes the air fryer a bit more versatile, since you use the FlexBasket to make two separate servings of fries and Brussels sprouts, or remove the divider and maximize all the same to make one big chicken.
While Instant Pot does make air fryers, the brand also makes their staple Instant Pot appliances with air fryer capabilities. This means all the features you know and love that are standard for an Instant Pot, along with a setting to air fry. This Duo Crisp can pressure cook, slow cook, steam, sauté, warm food, roast, dehydrate, broil, sous vide, proof bread, make yogurt, transform into a mini oven, and air fry. Plus the Duo Crisp’s Ultimate Lid works with all settings, whereas with other Instant Pot models you might need to switch the lid out.
If the DualBasket Philips model above is a bit too big for your tastes but you still want an air fryer with a larger capacity, then we’d recommend the XL size. It’s a bit more of a standard air fryer that features that square-basket shape we prefer, but with a generous capacity that can fit up to five portions of food. Use the digital touchscreen to select between seven different presets, and get to cooking some crispy fries or chicken.
Though if you still want a large-capacity air fryer (just not quite as big as the DualBasket) opt for the Philips Premium XXL. It uses the same silhouette at the Philips XL, but with a 7-ounce capacity. The digital interface is also a little different, with a dial to adjust settings instead of a touchscreen.
